Biosketch
Jonathan T. Overpeck, PhD is the Samuel A. Graham Dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan. He is also the William B. Stapp Collegiate Professor in SEAS, a Professor of Earth and Environmental Science, and a Professor of Climate and Space Science and Engineering, all at Michigan. He earned his PhD and MSc degrees from Brown University and BA degree (with honors) from Hamilton College. He was a post-doctoral fellow and Research Scientists at Columbia University and NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, before being appointed as the Founding Head of the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program in Boulder, CO. He also served as the Founding Director of the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology in Boulder, before moving to the University of Arizona where he was a Professor of Geosciences, and also the Director of the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth before becoming a Founding Co-Director of the Institute of the Environment. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Other awards include the US Dept. of Commerce Gold Medal, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Walter Orr Roberts award of the American Meteorological Society, and the Quivira Coalition’s Radical Center Award for his work with rural ranchers.

Jonathan T. Overpeck, PhD, is an interdisciplinary scientist with research focused on a broad range of climate, Earth and biosphere topics. These include climate dynamics, paleoclimatology, drought dynamics, climate-vegetation-ecosystem dynamics, hydroclimatology, climate modeling, climate variability, climate change, monsoon dynamics, ENSO dynamics, sea level change, climate change adaptation and resilience, drought and aridification resilience, natural resource management, stakeholder engagement and co-production of knowledge, climate change and law, environmental communication, and environmental education.
